Texas Pete
Bobbie Mardis
Texas Pete was a mighty fine cowboy
A mighty fine cowboy was he.
He could ride the range
And rope a steer
And still be home by three.
The Chisholm Trail was a mighty fine trail
A mighty fine trail was it.
It crossed the Red
And the Cimarron too
Through Enid after a bit.
Ole Pete drove cattle up that trail
Dogies, steers and more.
From Texas hills
‘Cross Okie’s plains
Til reaching Kansas’ shore.
Chuck wagon fare on the Chisholm Trail
Was hardly fit to eat
Hard tack and beans
Black coffee to chew
But this was just fine for Ole Pete.
Back down the Trail, back home he rode
But his wife he could not see
The note she left
Her complaint so clear “You didn’t get home by three.”
